BEST FOOT FORWARD
O wad some Power the giftie gie us,
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae mony a blunder free us,
An' foolish notion:
What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us,

Few of us have seen the rear view of ourselves running. For some of us, not many others see us that way either. Treadmill & video camera are the answer and Simon Costain, Podiatrist to the British team at the Barcelona Olympics, talked to us about it on 11th Oct.

That may take a load off your mind but it all lands on your foot everytime you put it down. The results appeared in pictures of downtrodden trainers and crumpled feet, but help may be at hand in "Gait Analysis" by qualified experts. Short of that, choose shoes that are supportive & cushioned rather than just cushioned. Simple measures may help such as keeping the feet straight fore & aft during leg stretch, changing lacing patterns, avoiding cambers and inserting Sorbothane pads. Orthotics need proper analysis & design and interventional methods such as cortisone injections or surgery need thinking about twice (or even thrice).

Some of us may have felt that if we thought too much about it we'd never put one foot in front of the other and that centipedes are perhaps fortunate in their lack of physiological insight.
