SNOWTIME AIN'T NO TIME TO STAY OUTDOORS
The Cross-Country season has continued over rather dry courses before the arrival of deep snow in Kent for Christmas / New Year.

Mark Watling paid one of his flying visits to retain the Davis Cup and assist a fairly easy win in the first Mobmatch against Orion.

In the Kent Championships, Roy Smith in 17th was our first Senior home in a fairly low-key team. Our boys teams won at U17, U15 and U13 and Matthew Hill was individual winner at U15.

Pete Barlow, running well and now a Vet, won the Browning Tankard in the Club Championship.

Pat Squires took the new Handicapper to the cleaners in the Christmas Yacht Handicap (is he any better than the last one I ask myself?). After three events in the Bennett, Simon Lloyd has a clear lead, but time will tell.

MATTERS ARISING - December Committee Business
1 The improvements to the Ladies shower/toilet facilities had been completed on schedule. They were officially opened by Mary Peters when she visited the Clubhouse on 30th Nov as our guest to start the Orion Mob Match and attend the supper in the evening. The cost of the work had exceeded the budget largely due to structural problems from the original building, discovered once refurbishment work had started. Covering the overspend hangs on whether a grant from the London Marathon Charities Fund is received. Anyone who has not contributed to the associated Loofah Appeal is encouraged to do so.

2 Further progress with the George Brooks Memorial has confirmed that a bench will be installed at Norman Park in the near future.

3 Brenda Brent had written requesting volunteers to assist with serving teas at Norman Park for our home fixtures during the 1997 track and field season. Any volunteers should contact a member of the Committee.

4 An adjusted budget for 1997 was presented to the Committee, showing a small surplus of about £550.

The Chairman of the Finance Group, P/P Derek Gregory, announced his intention to resign at the next AGM. A debt of thanks for his four years in office was recorded. It was stressed that although everyone did not always agree with his caution, the prudent principles that he adopted through some difficult financial times should not be forgotten, and should act as a guide in the future.

Again, if anyone would like to volunteer for this post, please make yourself known. Derek and the Treasurer, Peter Long, will happily explain the job description to you.

5 Plans revealed at a recent Bromley Leisure Services forum, covering the future of the Crystal Palace Sports Centre when the lease expires in about two years time, did not include a track and field facility. Concern was expressed that the loss of it in this area would be a calamity for grass root young athletes.

John Baldwin, Chairman

(Editor's note: The Bromley Times of 19th Dec reports that the result of a study into the future of the National Sports Centre is expected next Spring.)

HEATHEN HAUNTS (21) Maryon and Maryon-Wilson Parks by John Baldwin
(Illustrated by Dave Johnson)

The idea of runs in the Woolwich/Charlton area in this day and age may seem far-fetched for a club with harrier foundations. However this run does have close historical connections with the Club in its early Blackheath days, and can still be used for the benefit of harrier and track athlete. It was indeed much used by the writer during the '60s and '70s (19 hundred that is) for many lunchtime jaunts from my place of work.

The historical connections go back to 1893 when Sir Spencer Maryon-Wilson presented a trophy to the Club for the encouragement of swimming, which today's aquatic harriers still compete for.

Researching further back in history, the local landowners changed from Wilson to Maryon to Maryon-Wilson, and indeed Sir Spencer was fully Spencer Maryon Maryon-Wilson. No doubt to play safe even the park is split into Maryon and Maryon-Wilson Parks.

At the risk of turning the article into a history lesson, the area was known as Hanging Wood, notorious for highway robbers in the 18th century. So maybe things have not changed that much! I wonder what excuses were then, without having unemployment and drugs to blame. And so to the run.

Entering Maryon Park from the Woolwich Rd close by the Thames Barrier, you soon come to Green Chain Walk sign, indicating Charlton straight ahead and an alternative route avoiding steps. In fact the runners' route is off to the right along a curved uphill path meeting the top of the steps, counted at 115, after about 200 metres and some 25 metres higher. A good start for a hill circuit!

A short pebble path leads on to Thorntree Rd, though the thorn trees are not too evident these days. Crossing the road brings you into Maryon-Wilson Park, at which point a right turn drops sharply downhill on the start of a real roller-coaster anti-clockwise circuit of the park. Nowadays, nestling in the central dell of the park, there is an enclosure housing deer and an assortment of farmyard animals, all seemingly oblivious of the panting runner.

After half the circuit, and to follow the Green Chain, a gate takes you out onto Charlton Rd and into Charlton Park. Here too there is an open football pitch area, ideal for fartlek and repetition sessions. Conveniently for those not surviving the fartlek session, the cemetery and Cemetery Lane run along the eastern end of the field, taking the Green Chain out onto Ha-Ha Road. Unfortunately now surrounded by busy roads, we are out onto the rough grassland of Woolwich Common and hence ever upward into Castle Wood and Jack Wood, subject of previous Heathen Haunts. (Geoff Crowder in Heathen Haunts 2, Courier 13.2 Nov 1993)

Finally, to end as I began, on an historical theme, is there a reader, apart from John (E) Turner, who can tell me why, and the derivation of, the name Ha-Ha Road? I do know the answer by the way. No prizes but answers to the Editor please.

Maryon Wilson Club Swim 1997: Terry Brightwell is trying to arrange the fixture but it will not be at Beckenham Baths due to rebuilding.)

SEVENTY YEARS ON

New Headquarters - Dec 1926/ Jan 1927 (Gazettes 322 & 323)
The first run from our new headquarters at Hayes took the form of an ordinary training run, the only difference being that the conditions under which that run took place were certainly extraordinary.

The premises were "nearing completion", a term which needs no explanation to all those who know the wiles of the building profession, but owing to the strenuous efforts on the part of some of our older members, we enjoyed both comfort and cleanliness which would be the envy of many athletic clubs...

Upstairs was Tommy Grant, buttering the bread. We congratulate last year's president on his efforts, and also on the thickness of the slices.

And it was he who spotted,so the story says,

An ancient building, battered and decayed,
Conveniently situated down at Hayes,

From which (with care) a Club House could be made.

...The 'Heathen athletes arrived at Hayes in divers manners, and whilst they were exchanging their pretty plus-fours and snappy sports suitings for holey hose and perennial pull-overs, the voice boomed out: "All upstairs!". The president, H F Pash, said that although the HQ had been used previously, he thought it was appropriate on the first day of the New Year that he should make a few remarks about the enterprise and he particularly wished to express the thanks of the Club to the members who had carried the work through to a successful conclusion. There was in some Art Gallery a picture of Christopher Columbus discovering America and perhaps some day the Club would have a picture of "T K Grant Discovering our Headquarters". ...The runners then formed into their respective packs to enjoy a gentle run of 71/2  miles over the usual Nicholls Hill course.
