OUT & IN
The main activities in the new year have been over the country and on the boards. Those outdoors may well have envied their friends with a nice roof over them.

We had good representation in the county XC champs, individual winners being David Taylor for HHH in the Surrey senior and Rebecca Taylor in the Kent U13G.

In our Club Vets Champs Ken Daniel took the Browning Tankard, possibly the first time that a M50 has done so. Con Griffin was first M40, Joe Clare M60 and Anne Cilia first LV.

We were represented in both the Southern and National XC Champs, where we might pick out for mention the third and tenth places respectively achieved by Dan Ayrton. In the National our best Team placing was by the Junior Men who just missed the medals.
We recorded a win against Ranelagh in the Mobmatch, where fields have become of only modest size in recent seasons. In fact it was only due to a bit of strength in depth that we won on this occasion.

TV viewers will know that it has been an active time indoors recently. Among many good performances we might note those of Bob Minting, Michael Skinner, Dwayne Grant, Fabian Collymore, Katy Porter and Sam Singer.

CROSS-COUNTRY FIXTURES
Fixtures are affected by the outbreak of Foot & Mouth disease and by flooding. At the time of writing it seems unlikely that the Club 10, scheduled for 10th Mar, can be held over farmland. The SEAA Vets championship, due the same day, has been cancelled.
Part of Sparrows Den is under water and the Schools' Race on 14th Mar can probably not be held there. Norman Park is a possible alternative.

A herd of cows is kept on Farthing Down and the SLH Mobmatch on 17th Mar seems vulnerable, as do the Closing 5 and National Vets on 24th Mar. Watch for further notification.

In view of the situation runners are asked to stay off farmland.

NOTE: ALL CROSS_COUNTRY RACES ARE OFF 5-03-01

MORE HELP WANTED
By now you should have received papers for the AGM of 24th March. From the list of Post Holders you will see that a number of posts have remained vacant since last year and that there are now to be some further retirements.

Blackheath Harriers, Bromley is one of the oldest and largest athletics clubs, with 780 members. But to be one of the best we must find more helpers. I know, from acquaintance with results, that where we have effective team management we are successful; where we don't, we're not. Moreover, help is needed in many ways other than those directly concerned with active athletics. Even if you have only limited time and expertise please come forward.

For any aspect of Track & Field contact Dave Liston, 70 Sermon Drive, Swanley BR8 7HT (01322 663504). Otherwise, talk to the President, Hon.Secretary or any Club Officer.

THE NAME CHANGE SAGA
No doubt most of you will have read, or heard, about the prolonged struggle we have had to get the name change, approved at last years AGM, accepted by the South of England AA, following an objection by Bromley AC.

Eventually an Appeal Meeting was set up on 31st January, at which the Club was represented by Chris Haines and John Baldwin, with two representatives from Kent AA and Bromley AC. This was the first opportunity we had to put forward our reasons for wishing to change. A meeting, well controlled by Peter Ogie the SEAA Chairman, gave all parties a fair chance to put their views.

The final judgement found predominantly in our favour. It did concede that there had been some confusion, but this had not been deliberate on our part, and had been due to "people jumping to erroneous conclusions". The main reasons for supporting our appeal were those put forward at last years AGM, and it is best to quote clauses 4.2.2, 4.2.3 and 4.2.4 from the judgement as follows:

4.2.2 UK Athletics continually emphasise that the sport depends on a strong club structure, so that it behoves clubs to be active and raise their profile in their local communities, and particularly, strive to obtain commercial sponsorship.

4.2.3 It would be quite unreasonable to expect local businesses to sponsor clubs if their local connections were not prominently displayed. For this reason it is acceptable for the designation "Bromley" to appear in the club's name.

4.2.4 However, in order to alleviate confusion, the club is asked whether a modified designation such as "(Bromley)", ",Bromley" or "in Bromley" would serve its purpose.

Clause 4.2.4 was discussed at the February Committee meeting and it was agreed to put forward option 2, with the added comma, as a proposal to the AGM on 24th March 2001.

However it is known that Bromley AC have now submitted a counter appeal.

John Baldwin (Hon. Secretary)
