SCVAC Final @ Battersea Park 31/08/03 Photos here The SCVAC league final is contested by the 7 teams who win the league title in their respective Southern county and B&B, representing Kent were the defending Men's champions. The final was held at Battersea Park track on Sunday 31st Aug. and the day dawned bright, with the promise of sunshine and warmth throughout the day. Just what old bones and limbs need. The format was somewhat different to the usual evening league meetings as this is an all day affair, with all disciplines except hurdling covered across three age groups V40, V50 and V60.This year for the first time a number of the V50 track events also had A and B strings, so our strength in depth is a great asset. B&B had, on paper, a strong team, with over 25 athletes competing on the day. During the season we have welcomed a number of debutants and it was encouraging at the final to see more new faces, especially of the calibre of Bill Foster and Trevor Llewelyn. New boy Ricky Fox kicked of proceedings with a solid performance in the 100M, followed by Tom Phillips who won his heat, which brought a smile to his face which he maintained all day. Denis Wallington produced his usual solid performance in the V50 100M, one of six events he contested that day, before debutant Dave White stepped up for the V60 sprint, by the end of which he had begun to warm up. (Dave has promised to be club record holder over 800M V 60 next season!) In the meantime, the high flying Alan Hardy and Jim Day in the vault, plus another debutant in Ian Holder, plus Denis again, in the Long jump were securing valuable points (Alan competed in a total 4 events and Jim in 3).At the same time Colin Brand started his campaign with a second place in the shot (to be followed by a win in the Javelin), whilst Paul Featherstone and Gordon Hickey secured 2nd and 3rd spots in the Hammer, before going on to gain a 2nd and a 1st in the Javelin and Shot respectively. Chris Ellis won the V50 discus in possibly his last event before relocating to Wales. We were expected to score well on the track and it was no surprise to see Bill Foster dominate in the 1500M A string with Mark Watling managing (his usual) second place in the B string. It was however a surprise to see Silky Ken Daniels beaten and in a slow time too, which was explained when he rushed straight from the track to the toilets! He bravely came back to run the 3K for another second place. Chris Woodcock came up from the West Country to also double up in the 1500M and the 3K, disappointed to be hampered by injury having fallen from a high hedge (don't ask!) recently. Another runner up from the country was Bob Minting, who ran untroubled in the V50 400 and 800M and also won the high jump as well as leading off the Medley relay. Neil Ayrton won the V40 800M, but was coming down the finishing straight in the 400M contesting for the lead, when his hamstring went. A combination hop, skip and jump saw him over the line in third. Mike Peel carried on the good performances of past presidents, with a third place in the V60 event. Doug Cocker returned to the side this year and enjoyed his win in the 800M B string, but needs to practice his starts for the 200M. In the longer events, Con Griffin came up against stiff opposition and was just off his best in the 3K, Ken was still under the weather but managed second and our third debutant Terry Brightwell ran strongly for third. The walkers all gained good points despite all competing against age groups 10, or 20 years below their own. Forty year old walkers, where are you? As the day wore on B&B moved to the front and gradually pulled away from the competition. Neil's injury in meant a late rearrangement to the relay squads, but we managed a second place in both the 4x100M and the Medley. The Medley was notable for the appearance of our fourth debutant Trevor Llewelyn, who had come to spectate having seen a notification on the website. He convinced himself he would enjoy a return to 400M running and as he had his spikes with him, so it proved. So, the end of a long, but enjoyable day, saw B&B remain as SCVAC men's champions, winning by over 30 points. My thanks to all the athletes, who competed on the day and throughout the season. Thanks also to the officials who have helped us through the season. A special mention to Steve Hollingdale and his clip board for his help at the final and to Trevor Simmons and his magic thumbs.
Blackheath and Bromley men's and ladies veteran sides both win their respective leagues! The B&B men's side will again represent Kent in the SCVAC final at Battersea on 31st August, where they will be looking to retain the title won last year; the ladies side have won promotion to Division 1. B&B men's side again demonstrated the value of strength in depth, when despite injury and absences they were still able to win at the new track in Canterbury. Mark Watling kept up his string of good performances in the 800 metres and then repeated the effort in the relay. The President ran the V60 800M to warm up for a winning Long Jump and regulars Daniels, Brand and Hickey scored a 1,2,3 between them. The thoroughbred Daniels remaining unbeaten all season proving once again that he is not ready to go to pasture, despite a reverse earlier in the season when his son Chris beat him. We welcomed two new scorers in Ricky Fox, a guest over 100 in a brisk 12.5 from a standing start and a strong relay leg and Richard Worley, who ran his first ever 800M, coming second and also guested in the 100M under 13 seconds. Mike Martineau in the long jump, Rob Brown in the 100M and the team manager in 4 events, completed the scoring. The Ladies team came second on the night, but the performance was enough to win the league and promotion to Division one. The problem will be staying there as the team have been weakened all season by an absence of more mature competitors. Maureen Millar won both her events and like Daniels remained unbeaten in all events all season. Bernie Simpson again won in the field, as did Helen Godsell and Beatrice Bollon on the track. Team manager Ann Cilia had the opportunity to score in three events, with two firsts and a second. The SCVAC final will be held at the Battersea arena, Battersea Park on Sunday 31st August. This is a full day of athletics for all age groups and the B&B side are the current champions. I will be looking to put out the strongest possible team on the day and to have as much support in the ground as possible. Please contact me if you would like to take part, to officiate or help in the field or to lend support in any way. My thanks to all those athletes who have taken part this year, winning us another league title. I hope to see you all at Battersea and in future competitions. My thanks also to those who have assisted in official duties, particularly those in our Home fixture at Norman park.
Ladies
The Home Competition and the Men continued to dominate and now cannot be caught in the race for the league tile and the spot in the SCVAC southern final at Battersea on 31st Aug. The Ladies suffered an unusual reverse, not turning out enough athletes. The men's event was notable for a storming run from Con Griffin ( father of Dave) in the 3K, where he dominated from gun to tape to win, a feat emulated by a strolling Ken Daniels( father of 3 sons who he made work on the track) . Mark Watling continued to improve his shorter race times in the 400M and our walkers destroyed the opposition with 3 first places. A special welcome back to Pete Hannell, returning after a serious car crash. We were strong in the throws and the jumps, with Paul Featherstone benefiting from Colin Brands tutelage in the Hammer throw. We also welcomed two new club members, Ian Melin the 3K and Richard Worley ( father of Alex) in the 400M,an event he claimed to have enjoyed, despite not walking for a week afterwards. The ladies suffered from insufficient cover, especially in the older age groups and in the throws. Therefore it was good to see Ann Cilia revert to her multiple event performance of last year, although I can't find her height in the pole vault. Helen Godsell (mum of Amy and Joe) jogged round the 400M as a warm up for her World Master trip to Peurto Rico, where she won gold in the 4 x 100M.
Ladies
Both the Blackheath and Bromley masters sides kept up their winning ways in the latest match of the SCVAC Kent league and therefore continue to head their respective divisions. The men had a strong team and fielded competitors in all events, including 3 V60 events, winning two of these. The President made his debut in the competition running a 1500M, but I have temporarily mislaid his time. Paul Featherstone has finally made the selection criteria and scored good points in the Shot putt and in a particularly competitive Javelin event. Mark Watling continued his improvement to win the 800M ahead of Neil Ayrton, who had pulled a hamstring, forcing him to withdraw from the relay. This required Ken Daniel to run a leg of the relay, but I am unable to print his comments in this report. We were also pleased to welcome back, after illness, Doug Cocker ( still the V40 record holder over 800M) who ran a strong opening leg in the relay. If anyone wishes to contact Doug, he is now enjoying his retirement on the beaches of the Maldives.......The Field eventers all notched up good points. The ladies continue to dominate, strengthened by Janet Long, making her debut and the first ever V50 lady to run for the B&Bs. Maureen Millar was very strong in the sprint and the relay and Helen Godsell returned from injury to run the B leg in both events. A worrying trend continued with Anne Cilia only competing in two events, having secured enough runners to run a relay squad and Bernie Simpson competed in all the field events. Not to be outdone Beatrice Bollon won the 1500M. The next meeting is the home fixture for the B&Bs and is at Norman Park on Friday 18th July. If you can come along to support or to help the officials, you will be very welcome.
SCVAC KENT LEAGUE @ LADYWELL 02/06/03 The Men continued their winning ways and head the league, the ladies are beaten into second place, but are still out in from overall. The men suffered from some last minute cancellations and also a lack of V60 competitors, which cost points, but a strong showing across most events brought us home in first place. Notable were a brisk 12.5 seconds for the 100M by Tom Phillips, fresh from altitude training on his motor cycle, a gutsy 2.07 800M form Mark Watling, who is improving in every race and a fine win in the V40 discus from Chris Ellis, one of his last league appearances before he moves to Wales. (Ken Daniels ran away with the V50 800M and was only a couple of seconds slower than the winning time in the Div one ladies event). The ladies came up against stiff opposition from the home team...the first time they have fielded a side. All competitors did well, but we suffer from a lack of older athletes and forfeit a large number of points at each event. With promotion beckoning, this is something we will need to address ready for next season. I was disappointing to see Ann Cilia compete in only two events. Her new found team mates seem to have affected her stamina! Both teams are in action again at the Erith Stadium on Monday 23rd June.
VETERAN T&F RESULTS DEANGATE 17/05/03 The Mens team returned to winning ways in this match and now lead in the League. The ladies turned to the French Connection and continue to dominate. The men's team was weakened by last minute changes but demonstrated the strong team sprit scoring in all but one event. Notable was a V60 run by Colin Brand in the 400 M (yes Colin Brand!) , a pole vault by Bob Minting, who came up from the West country on his birthday and Mike Martineau scoring points in the triple jump. All extremely valuable points. Performance of the night was probably Neil Ayrton's 53.6s in the 400M. (It could have been Ken Daniel's smmoth demonstration of middle distance running in the 5000M, but he has asked me not to mention that). The men still require some strength in depth and especially runners in the V 60 age group. The ladies team have found some excellent new recruits for this season and can even run all four legs of a relay. In this meeting Bernadette Bollon ran a fine 400M to take first place. Ann Cilia was disappointed not to throw the Hammer, but tried a run and a jump. The B&B team appear to be dominant in Div 2, but will need more representation across events and age groups if they gain promotion. Results Below.
SCVAC KENT
LEAGUE RESULTS FROM DARTFORD 25TH APRIL 2003 ............and now for the ladies. 5 girls ran away with the match. Against admittedly weak competition they competed hard, recording a number of first and second places. The new athletes from the Bromley side of B&B proved invaluable, so for once Anne Cilia did not have to compete in every event (I hope she hasn't given up the shot for good after a couple of promising years!). Thanks to Anne for helping out with the management on the night. The evening ended with the ladies completing, for the first time a 4 x100M relay, coming through the rain and darkness for what must surely be a club record. If any one fancies coming along to any meeting, there are lots of guest slots available and we have a desparate need for Vet 60 runners. You don't need speed, just legs and a running vest! Any volunteers for official duties would be appreciated, we need a timekeeper and a track judge for each meeting. NEXT MEETING 16TH MAY. DO YOU WANT TO TAKE PART?
