September 2005 - World Masters Champs in San Sebastian, Spain 22/8/05 to 3/9/05

Bob Minting wins the M55 with 2:07.99.

According to the WAVA tables, that's equivalent to a senior time of 1:47.06. The age 55 time is not good enough for a club record, but that's because they are still in 10 year age groups and I'm in competition with myself age 50. When will the club catch up with the more standard 5 year age groups?

22 July 2005 - Kent Veteran's League - Canterbury

This was the second running of this meeting following a previous cancellation and it clashed with the Grand Prix meeting at Crystal Palace. This led to a low scoring and unpredictable meeting, with many events not fully covered. Both teams went into the meeting leading their respective leagues, the men virtually uncatchable, but the ladies needing a first, or second place, in order to be sure of a league topping end to the season and selection for the Southern counties veterans final at Battersea Park.

On the night, both teams proved too strong and their victories ensured a happy ending and a visit to south London in September. For the ladies this was a night to remember as they had only been promoted from the second Division last season.

This is my last Kent League match report. I am leaving the balmy temperatures of Norman Park and heading off for the wilds of Northamptonshire. If you want to read match reports and see great results like the teams have been delivering for season after season a new team Mens manager/captain/donkey is urgently needed. Please make yourself known to anyone on the committee. It's great fun and highly rewarding, even if most vets are more highly strung than our junior teams! JRT

BLACKHEATH AND BROMLEY LADIES ARE LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

11 July 2005 - Kent Veteran's League - Erith

A match that had originally been scheduled as the last match of the season, gained new significance following the cancellation of the meeting at Canterbury, due to a violent thunderstorm. This meeting was also not without incident as one runner suffered due to his malfunctioning pacemaker, not a problem the Kenyans usually have in the Golden League meetings. Despite the long delay, both teams managed victories on the night which meant that both teams would go into the final match leading the league positions. The ladies team had a resounding victory with 71 points, with their rivals trailing with 48 points.

3 June 2005 - Kent Veteran's League - Norman Park

The fourth match of 6, produced a close match for both men's and ladies teams, with some excellent and close races. Both teams were victorious on the night, although the ladies had to share the spoils with their closest rivals Cambridge Harriers and remain locked together at the top of the league.

For the men there was a clean sweep in all the V60 events, with a winning debut for the season from Mike Cronin. Bob Minting visited from the West country and ran an impressive 1500m, as a guest, before running a storming 56.1s final split in the 4x 400M to bring us home second.

Once again strength in depth was the key to points accumulation, which has now consolidated our position at the head of the league.

The ladies also turned out athletes in all events, but one, to secure an equal first place. A number of the athletes competed in 3 events, with Nan Cross securing a 1st, 2nd and a 3rd on the night.

The highlight of the races was the ladies 4 x 400M which saw Miranda Porritt pull out all the stops to close the gap, only to fall short by half a second.

Thanks go to Steve Hollingale who proved a fine recorder and Rob Brown, who demonstrated how to use a clipboard on the track.

Also thanks to Ken Daniel, who at last made a contribution ( by getting the track ready) and Mike Davies, for organising a smoothly run meeting

20 May 2005 - Kent Veteran's League - Ashford

On a windy and wild night in Ashford, both men's and ladies teams overcame the elements to record clear victories, which elevated them to table topping league positions after three matches.

Both team performances were built on a foundation of solid, if not spectacular performances, with a smattering of first places.

On the night, pride of place in the men's meeting goes to Peter Hamilton, the current V50 number one, with an authoritive victory in the 800M, which he led from gun to tape.

In the ladies match, notable results were the comprehensive 1, 2 in the 800M by Miranda Porritt and Angie Alstrachan (who would have come second in the A leg), a fifty metre victory for the relay squad, and from Helen Godsell, whop competed in all events, except the Discus.

Next Match Friday 3rd June at Norman park.

9 May 2005 - Kent Veteran's League - Deangate

On a bitterly cold May night both Mens and Ladies Veterans sides generated hot performances leading

to victories for both teams. After two matches both squads are now contesting for the leading positions in the league, in one of the closest starts to this competition for some seasons. Once again getting a representative in each event, due to our strength in depth, is a deciding factor. In addition to maximum league points, both teams also secured a hatful of match points, which may prove a deciding factor, when final places are decided. Special mention on this occasion goes to new member Craig Mitcheson, who made a winning debut in the triple jump and will be a valuable addition to the squad.

STOP PRESS

Meeting at Ashford on 20th May. Both squads again managed winning performances. Full results to follow. Next meeting at home, Norman Park on 3rd June. Please come to support.

22 April 2005 - Kent Veteran's League - Dartford

Both men's and ladies sides found themselves below normal strength due to absence and injury. This meant several people competing in many events, or competing in strange events ( a notable example being Colin Brands V60 200M), or in one case not having a scorer, a tactical error, which cost the men a share of first place. As defending SCVAC Kent and Southern Champions, the men are hopeful of better results, which will come when they are back to full strength. The ladies too should be looking to challenge for higher honours when key competitors are fit again.

Next Match 9th May at Deangate. Officials always welcome.

6 February 2005 - SCVAC indoor championships at Sutton Arena

Despite short notice of the Championships (few had more than a week’s warning!), and the necessarily limited range of events because there are no bends in the track at Carshalton, the Club turn out was good. Due notice was given that we have several vets already gearing up for a serious summer.

Over W50 60 metres, Helen Godsell shone for gold, with two clockings around 8.2. Hand timing, unfortunately, but these were faster than Helen’s European marks. In the M50 races, Tom Phillips recorded two runs of 8.0, and pronounced himself well pleased with his silver medal.

Jim Day had a Sunday of the sort we have come to expect from him down all these years. First over M70 60 m hurdles (12.4), high jump (1.15) and pole vault (a CBP of 2.50). Big Gordon Hickey notched another CBP with his 12.12 metre shot.
