European Masters Championships, Poznan, Poland 19 to 30 July 2006

Bob Minting & Jim Day - photos from Tom Philips

Four of the Club’s top Masters athletes were in action at the recent European Masters Championships in the scorching heat of Poznan, in Poland.

Bob Minting was one of the stars of the championships, winning five medals in the M55 category, three of which were gold. Bob had used July’s British Masters as a warm up, winning a unique combination of 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres and 1500 metres at the Birmingham event. In Poznan, he was the impressive winner of the 1500 metres in 4.40.19, and followed this up later in the day with easy qualification for the 400m finals next day. Bob was pipped for gold in the 400, gaining the silver medal in 55.58. A few days rest brought him flying back in the 800 metres, which he won convincingly in 2.07.42. Bob was also a member of the silver medal winning M55 4x100 metre relay squad, before anchoring the M55 4x400 metre relay team home to gold.

Blackheath & Bromley’s Masters Team Captain Tom Phillips smashed his M50 100 metre best, and the Club record, in his semi-final, recording a time of 12.21, and qualifying for his first major championships individual final. He placed 8th in the final. “Getting to that final had been this season’s target. I’m delighted.” he later said. The M50 200 metres was one of the most hotly contested events in Poznan. Tom qualified for the semi-final with 25.51, and ran a personal best of 25.46 in his semi-final, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

Evergreen Jim Day placed third in Poznan in the M70 pole vault, with 2.40 metres, maintaining his record of winning medals in most of the major championships he has entered.

Dave Taylor was the easy winner of the M40 5,000 metres race in 14.42.34, winning by more than 20 seconds.

14 July 2006 - Kent Veteran's League - Canterbury

Despite a summer where administration problems have made official results hard to come by, Blackheath & Bromley’s men and women’s Masters teams have won the Kent Masters League, and the right to be at the Southern Counties Masters Finals at Battersea on 3 September. This repeats the teams’ successes of last year, and is the result of a long hard summer of competition, with some excellent performances along the way.

The culmination was the recent Kent League fixture at Canterbury. The six League fixtures have ranged from an unusually still and warm evening at Deangate, near Chatham, to a miserable, wind and rain-swept May evening at Norman Park. Mind you, that meeting was enlivened by Neil Ayrton’s 54.2 second 400 metres in ghastly conditions. Neil pulled up injured in the next league fixture, leaving Mark Watling to take his place as 400m/800m specialist, and one of the top points scorers of the summer.

Club Masters Captain and sprinter Tom Phillips lowered the Club’s M50 age group record three times during the season, finishing with 12.3 seconds at Canterbury. He has been ably backed up this year by Clem Leon, in his first full year for the team, as an accomplished sprinter and jumper, whose recent national title in the M50 high jump is tribute to the guy’s versatility. In a year when performances in the M40 age group had been hampered by injuries and non-availability of athletes, it has been the M50 athletes, including Club President Ken Daniel, who have anchored the Men’s team to success.

Blackheath & Bromley’s team of women’s Masters is small but hugely talented, including multiple national title holder Beatrice Simpson in the throwing events, and W60 athlete Nanette Cross, who has performed as a one woman W60 team through the whole season, in a huge array of different events. Women’s team Captain Anne Cilia adopted the same tactic in the league as last year, of fielding an athlete in every single event at every league fixture, and steadily chalking up top points overall.

So, athletes and supporters, please make a diary note to be at Battersea Park on Sunday 3 September!

19 May 2006 - Kent Veteran's League - Norman Park

The Masters Team Management were surprised to see these posted in AW as a set of results. At the time, they had not even been provided to the participating clubs.

Our understanding is that within the rules agreed for the League for 2006, the match remains un-finished. The pole vault and walk were not held – the former because of the bad weather and strong gusting winds, and the latter due to time constraints as the meeting over-ran hugely. Before the end of the evening, and the cancellation of the walk, it had already been agreed to re-schedule the vault, but as less than 80% of the events had taken place, in our view (and that of at least one other club), the result cannot be declared as a final outcome. This is all still subject to discussion. If this does end up standing as a final result, it will be a bad blow for us, and makes it imperative that we get our top teams out for the remainder of the fixtures.

I have a few female highlights from Fri eve at the vets league, don't have results in front of me so it's off the top of my head.

The evening began with b+ b winning the first 3 track events and continued in much the same way for a lot of the events. Interestingly we had more ladies representing us on Fri than we had at the vets final at Battersea last September which featured all the events at one match.

Our successful team saw the welcome return of Maureen Miller who won her 200m race, launched the shot a good 7m and helped the team to a good win in the 4x 100m relay. We had another new recruit, Viv Mitchell who ran well to easily win the B string 1500m. Mel Healy who was new to us last year showed great improvement to win her 200m race and take us into the lead in the relay where she was supported by Annie McDonough, who had already run a 1500m and Helen Godsell who like Mel had won her 200m race, this time for the w50's.

Beatrice won the 50's javelin and shot and competed in the high jump, supported by Heather Symmons in the javelin who also ran in the w50's 1500m and Anne Cilia in the high jump. Nanette won the w60's shot and was just beaten into 2nd place in the 200m. Continuing her winning form from last year Miranda Porritt comfortably won the a string 1500m.

All in all a good start to the season, well done everyone.
Anne

Solid all round team performances from both Men and Women at Sutcliffe Park on Friday meant victory for the Women with 76 points, 9 ahead of Dartford, and a win also for the men with 66 points, 3 ahead of Cambridge.

Full details to follow but some excellent performances from our debutants including a 2nd place in the Vets 40 1500 for Alan Camp in 4.34.1. Alan being 2 weeks away from his 50th birthday! Another new boy Craig Mitchinson won the Vets 50 High Jump as well as throwing the javelin.

Joe Camacho also made a promising start in the B string 200 and added a contribution to the 4x100 relay team who were 2nd. Also a winning 4.40.0 from President Ken Daniel.

Blackheath & Bromley Results from World Masters Indoors, Linz, Austria 15 to 20 March 2006

Dave Taylor ran an excellent 3000m at the World Masters Indoors Champs in Linz. He ran 8.42.26 for silver and was only just outsprinted by new kid on the block Bashir Hussein who was credited with 8.42.07

Dear all,

You won’t have seen it on the TV, or read about it in the newspapers (more’s the pity!), but from 15 to 20 March, the second World Masters Indoor Athletics Championships were held in Austria’s third city, Linz, on the banks of the River Danube. These followed the highly successful inaugural World Indoors for Masters in Sindelfingen, Germany, in 2004.

The event was huge, with over 3,000 athletes taking part, and the indoor facilities put anything in the UK utterly to shame!. The GB Team included a select crop of BBHAC Masters – and they all came home with medals!

Former World Champion Helen Godsell won W50 60m and 200m bronze and anchored the GB team home to a 4 x 200m relay silver medal. Her 8.34 60m heat time was a good season’s indoor best.

Peter Hamilton braved snow and ice underfoot in the M55 cross country race for 11th place, and a share of the GB Team’s silver medal. A couple of evenings before, he’d run 10.29.42 for 9th in the indoor 3,000m, only a slightly slower time than his sharp form at the recent GB Masters in Cardiff.

For pole vaulters Alan Williams and Jim Day, World Championships are something of a regular fixture. Alan secured silver in M50 with 4.10m and Jim was equal second with 2.40. Jim also ran 12.63 in the M70 60m hurdles heats, and was part of the GB squad which took silver in the M70 4 x 200m relay.

Tom Phillips was attending his first big international championships and made both the M50 60m and 200m semi-finals, equalling or breaking personal bests in the process, with 7.78 and 25.60 respectively. He was then second leg runner in the silver medal-winning M50 4 x 200m relay team, contributing a nifty 25.2 second individual split.

The next major Masters Championships are the European Masters, in Poznan, Poland, in July. BBHAC Masters will be there!

Tom
