17 November 2012 - BMAF Relays at Derby

In this era of ‘political correctness’ it is sometimes a little surprising to find really odd combinations. The BMAF has chosen its cross country relay formats to include all the ladies, with ages ranging from 35 onwards, paired with men over the age of 65. Last weekend’s event, hosted admirably by Derby AC, served to highlight some of the idiosyncrasies of this somewhat peculiar pairing.

The young ladies on the first leg, most of whom had selected 18mm spikes in view of the underfoot conditions, raced away from the start, leaving the rest of us – mostly older than their parents – to fight it out far behind them. I found myself engaged in a duel with the eventual winners from Bingley – not much changes – similar scenario ten years ago! We swapped places half a dozen times and it was just a tad frustrating to be passed finally with less than 200m remaining. However as I was the sole member of the Blackheath team on the day it didn’t make much difference to the final result.

Full results should be available on the BMAF website.

2 September 2012 - SVAC Inter-Club Final - Ashford

WE WON!

Well guys, we did it! Many of you were there, of course, and won't need telling!

Officially, we won the SCVAC Masters League Final today by 9.5 points from Abingdon AC, who sneaked in front of Herne Hill Harriers in the last few events. It's actually the largest winning margin for the Final for a few years. You'll recall, we lost by just one point last year, and by four points the year before. The match was the usual nail biter, and looked like being decided on the 4x400 relay, though we had a few points in hand before that, I suspect, with hindsight.

I am sending this out in a hurry, because I will be spending the next couple of days travelling out to the French Alps, and I'm unsure what my e-mail facilities will be until I get to Chamonix, where I will be spending the next 6 weeks.

Thank you all so much, those who took part and made today's win a reality. Thank you also to those who came and cheered. Adrian Stocks has care of the League trophy and will be parading it at the Clubhouse on Wednesday evening, if any of you fancy going and grabbing a share of the limelight. Adrian also has the trophy for our win in the Kent Masters League this year to wave at the unbelievers!

The full results from the match will be on the SCVAC web site before long, I'm sure.

This is a BIG win. As you may have heard me say before, I firmly believe that the SCVAC League Final is one of the top three Masters track and field events in the country. To win it again places us right up there as the best squad on the day.

So, enjoy the feeling of being champions again. You are.

Here's to a repeat next year, eh?

Tom

A message from Tom

There are some changes to the League this year. The content of the first two league fixtures have been swapped around. This makes excellent sense in terms of getting the best out of the track at Dartford, which will now host the third fixture. Those of you with memories will recall that the Dartford fixture last year was rather poor.

The other major Masters events regionally and nationally are:

BMAF Indoor Championships - Lee Valley Stadium, Sat/Sun 17/18 March 2012. Entries on-line, don't delay.

BMAF Outdoor Pentathlon and 10k runs and walks - Horspath Stadium, Oxford, Sun 27 May 2012

Southern Counties Championships - Norman Park, Sunday 3 June 2012

BMAF Throws Pentathlon - Copthall Stadium, Barnet, Sun 1 July 2012

BMAF Track and Field Championships - Moorways Stadium Derby (NB new venue), Sat/Sun 21/22 July 2012

BMAF Decathlon Championships (including GB/USA Challenge) Horspath Stadium, Oxford, Sat/Sun 4/5 August 2012 (note, six weeks earlier than usual)

European Masters Championships, Zittau, Germany 16 to 25 August 2012

British Masters Inter Area Match (participation by selection) - Solihull, Sunday 9 September 2012
